5 Teach These Things Freely unto Your Children

Teach These Things Freely unto Your Children

Teach These Things Freely unto Your Children

Recorded genealogy.

Genesis 5:24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

Moses 6:50–52 5But God hath made known unto our fathers that all men must repent.

51 And he called upon our father Adam by his own voice, saying: I am God; I made the world, and men before they were in the flesh.

52 And he also said unto him: If thou wilt turn unto me, and hearken unto my voice, and believe, and repent of all thy transgressions, and be baptized, even in water, in the name of mine Only Begotten Son, who is full of grace and truth, which is Jesus Christ, the only name which shall be given under heaven, whereby salvation shall come unto the children of men, ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, asking all things in his name, and whatsoever ye shall ask, it shall be given you.

Moses 6:7 Now this same Priesthood, which was in the beginning, shall be in the end of the world also.

Sin limits my ability to see, feel, and hear the things of God.
Moses 6:26–36

What do you learn about the effects of sin in these verses?

God calls me to do His work despite my weaknesses.
Moses 6:26–47

If you feel overwhelmed when you receive a new calling, you are in good company.

verses 37–47 The Lord can bless and empower us as He did Enoch.

Moses 7:13 13 And so great was the faith of Enoch that he led the people of God, and their enemies came to battle against them; and he spake the word of the Lord, and the earth trembled, and the mountains fled, even according to his command; and the rivers of water were turned out of their course; and the roar of the lions was heard out of the wilderness; and all nations feared greatly, so powerful was the word of Enoch, and so great was the power of the language which God had given him.

Others who felt inadequate

Exodus 4:10–16 10 ¶ And Moses said unto the Lord, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.

11 And the Lord said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth?

Jeremiah 1:4–10 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

Then said I, Ah, Lord God! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child.

2 Nephi 33:1–4 And now I, Nephi, cannot write all the things which were taught among my people; neither am I mighty in writing, like unto speaking; for when a man speaketh by the power of the Holy Ghost the power of the Holy Ghost carrieth it unto the hearts of the children of men.
And I know that the Lord God will consecrate my prayers for the gain of my people. And the words which I have written in weakness will be made strong unto them; for it persuadeth them to do good; it maketh known unto them of their fathers; and it speaketh of Jesus, and persuadeth them to believe in him, and to endure to the end, which is life eternal.

Ether 12:23–29 23 And I said unto him: Lord, the Gentiles will mock at these things, because of our weakness in writing; for Lord thou hast made us mighty in word by faith, but thou hast not made us mighty in writing; for thou hast made all this people that they could speak much, because of the Holy Ghost which thou hast given them;

24 And thou hast made us that we could write but little, because of the awkwardness of our hands.

Prophets Speak by the Power of the Holy Spirit

Moses 6:34 34 Behold my Spirit is upon you, wherefore all thy words will I justify; and the mountains shall flee before you, and the rivers shall turn from their course; and thou shalt abide in me, and I in you; therefore walk with me.

Abide in Me, and I in You; Therefore Walk with Me,

I’ll Go Where You Want Me to Go

The gospel of Jesus Christ was taught from the beginning.

Moses 6:48–68

Look for the things that you must know and do to be redeemed.

verse 53 Adam asked good why questions?

53 And our father Adam spake unto the Lord, and said: Why is it that men must repent and be baptized in water? And the Lord said unto Adam: Behold I have forgiven thee thy transgression in the Garden of Eden.

verses 53–65? God answered Adam’s questions, increasing his understanding and His appreciation for God’s plan.

verse 59 When we are baptized, we are born again.

59 That by reason of transgression cometh the fall, which fall bringeth death, and inasmuch as ye were born into the world by water, and blood, and the spirit, which I have made, and so became of dust a living soul, even so ye must be born again into the kingdom of heaven, of water, and of the Spirit, and be cleansed by blood, even the blood of mine Only Begotten; that ye might be sanctified from all sin, and enjoy the words of eternal life in this world, and eternal life in the world to come, even immortal glory;

Look for symbols. In the scriptures, objects or events can often represent or symbolize spiritual truths, especially truths about the Savior (see Teaching in the Savior’s Way7). These symbols can enrich your understanding of Him and His doctrine. For instance, what do you learn from the symbols of hearts and ears in Moses 6:27, eyes and clay in Moses 6:35, or water in Moses 6:59–60?

“Teach these things freely unto your children.”
Moses 6:51–62

In these verses, see how the Lord taught Adam and Eve the gospel, and they taught it to their children.

Mosiah 4:14–15 14 And ye will not suffer your children that they go hungry, or naked; neither will ye suffer that they transgress the laws of God…15 But ye will teach them to walk in the ways of truth and soberness; ye will teach them to love one another, and to serve one another.

Doctrine and Covenants 68:25–28 25 And again, inasmuch as parents have children in Zion, or in any of her stakes which are organized, that teach them not to understand the doctrine of repentance, faith in Christ the Son of the living God, and of baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of the hands, when eight years old, the sin be upon the heads of the parents….27 And their children shall be baptized for the remission of their sins when eight years old, and receive the laying on of the hands.

28 And they shall also teach their children to pray, and to walk uprightly before the Lord.

93:40–50 40 But I have commanded you to bring up your children in light and truth.,,, 43 And now a commandment I give unto you—if you will be delivered you shall set in order your own house, for there are many things that are not right in your house…. 48 Your family must needs repent and forsake some things, and give more earnest heed unto your sayings … 49 What I say unto one I say unto all; pray always.

God can help me do hard things.
Moses 6:26–34

Moses 6:26–34 Read about Enoch’s call to preach the gospel.

Enoch the Prophet

Moses 6:31 31 And when Enoch had heard these words, he bowed himself to the earth, before the Lord, and spake before the Lord, saying: Why is it that I have found favor in thy sight, and am but a lad, and all the people hate me; for I am slow of speech; wherefore am I thy servant?

Moses 6:32–34 32 And the Lord said unto Enoch: Go forth and do as I have commanded thee, and no man shall pierce thee. Open thy mouth, and it shall be filled, and I will give thee utterance, for all flesh is in my hands, and I will do as seemeth me good.

33 Say unto this people: Choose ye this day, to serve the Lord God who made you.

34 Behold my Spirit is upon you, wherefore all thy words will I justify; and the mountains shall flee before you, and the rivers shall turn from their course; and thou shalt abide in me, and I in you; therefore walk with me.

7:13 13 And so great was the faith of Enoch that he led the people of God, and their enemies came to battle against them; and he spake the word of the Lord, and the earth trembled, and the mountains fled, even according to his command; and the rivers of water were turned out of their course; and the roar of the lions was heard out of the wilderness; and all nations feared greatly, so powerful was the word of Enoch, and so great was the power of the language which God had given him.

What other prophets needed to do difficult things?

Noah, David, Ammon, or Samuel the Lamanite (see Gospel Art Booknos. 7197881)

Faith in Christ, repentance, baptism, and receiving the Holy Ghost prepare me to return to God.
Moses 6:50–62

Adam and Eve were taught the Doctrine of Christ. Look for the principles that they taught. Help the children prepare short talks about one of the principles to share with each other.

Moses 6:52, 57 52 And he also said unto him: If thou wilt turn unto me, and hearken unto my voice, and believe, and repent of all thy transgressions, and be baptized, even in water, in the name of mine Only Begotten Son, who is full of grace and truth, which is Jesus Christ, the only name which shall be given under heaven, whereby salvation shall come unto the children of men, ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, asking all things in his name, and whatsoever ye shall ask, it shall be given you.

57 Wherefore teach it unto your children, that all men, everywhere, must repent, or they can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God, for no unclean thing can dwell there, or dwell in his presence; for, in the language of Adam, Man of Holiness is his name, and the name of his Only Begotten is the Son of Man, even Jesus Christ, a righteous Judge, who shall come in the meridian of time.

fourth article of faith

Choose songs to sing:  Faith,” “When I Am Baptized,” and “The Holy Ghost” (Children’s Songbook, 96–97, 103, 105).

Heavenly Father wants parents to teach their children.
Moses 6:57–58

Moses 6:58 58 Therefore I give unto you a commandment, to teach these things freely unto your children
