Remember This Day, in Which Ye Came Out from Egypt
Exodus
7:5; 9:14
The Lord will deliver Israel with a mighty hand. There is none like Him in all
the earth!
Although there were many plagues, miracles don’t convert by
themselves, nor do they free us from doubt or hardening our hearts, unless we
turn in faith to the Lord Jesus Christ.
With the tenth plague, Pharaoh shooed the people out of the land, but even
after that he hardened his heart. The main thing to remember from this last
event is the grandeur of the Lord who is the Lamb of God. It is He alone that
can free us and make us whole.
The Passover was instituted as a standing memorial from year to year, so that
the children of Israel would remember what great things the Lord had done for
them, and to point them forward to the sacrifice He would make for them as the
Lamb of God.
I can choose to soften my heart.
Exodus
7–11
We need to remember that because of agency, we have the
right to choose whether we hold on to anger, whether we hold grudges, whether
we give up hope, or whether we seek revenge. Many of the verses in these
selections say that God hardened Pharaoh’s heart.
The JST says it differently. Pharaoh hardened his heart.
How can we work on having our hearts softened?
1 Nephi
2:16
16 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, being exceedingly young,
nevertheless being large in stature, and also having great desires to know of
the mysteries of God, wherefore, I did cry unto the Lord; and
behold he did visit me, and did soften my heart that I
did believe all the words which had been spoken by my father;
wherefore, I did not rebel against him like unto my brothers.
Mosiah
3:19
19 For the natural man is an enemy to God,
and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever,
unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit,
and putteth off the natural man and becometh
a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as
a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to
submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a
child doth submit to his father.
Alma
24:7–8
7 Now, these are the words which he said unto the people concerning
the matter: I thank my God, my beloved people, that our great God has in
goodness sent these our brethren, the Nephites, unto us to preach unto us,
and to convince us of the traditions of our wicked fathers.
8 And behold, I thank my great God that he has
given us a portion of his Spirit to soften our hearts, that we
have opened a correspondence with these brethren, the Nephites.
62:41
41 But behold, because of the exceedingly great length of the war
between the Nephites and the Lamanites many had become hardened, because of the
exceedingly great length of the war; and many were softened because of
their afflictions, insomuch that they did humble themselves before God,
even in the depth of humility.
Ether
12:27
27 And if men come unto me I will show unto them
their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be
humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men
that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before
me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong
unto them.
Jesus Christ can save me because of His Atonement.
Exodus
12:1–42
This section provides a good study guide for the Passover.
Come unto
Christ by identifying symbols that testify of Him. “All things,” the Lord
declared, “are created and made to bear record of me” (Moses 6:63; see also 2 Nephi 11:4). In Exodus 12, symbols like a lamb, blood,
unleavened bread, miracles, and deliverance all point to Christ. “Once we
understand how these objects relate to the Savior, they can teach us of His
power and attributes” (Teaching in the Savior’s Way, 7).
Moses
6:63
63 And behold, all things have their likeness, and all things
are created and made to bear record of me, both things which are
temporal, and things which are spiritual; things which are in the heavens
above, and things which are on the earth, and things which are in the earth,
and things which are under the earth, both above and beneath: all things bear
record of me.
2 Nephi
11:4
4 Behold, my soul delighteth in proving unto my people
the truth of the coming of Christ; for, for this end hath
the law of Moses been given; and all things which have been given of
God from the beginning of the world, unto man, are the typifying of
him
Since Easter, I have had a renewed desire to testify of
Jesus Christ and His resurrection and the marvelous things that He has done for
us and the great love our Father has for us in giving us His Son and this
beautiful world.
The sacrament helps me remember my deliverance through
Jesus Christ.
Exodus
12:14–17, 24–27; 13:1–16
It was important for the Israelites to keep in their memory
and to instill the message of the Passover to their children. During the
Passover, Jesus also instituted the sacrament. The Last Supper. While this was
the Last Supper with His beloved apostles, it was also the last supper in the
way the Passover was kept. The thing that we should keep remembering is that
Jesus was, is, and will always be our Savior, The Lamb of God, the Passover. As
we partake of the Sacrament, we covenant to always remember Him. He promises
that as we do, we can always have His Spirit to be with us, that we can retain
a remission of our sins; and at last, we can be saved and exalted in the
kingdom of God.
Exodus
12:14–17, 24–27 The particulars of the Feast of Unleavened Bread and the
keeping of the Passover were very important in preserving the memory of Israel
being saved from bondage and redeemed of the Lord.
What mean ye by this service?
27 That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of
the Lord’s passover, who passed over the houses of the children of
Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our
houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped.
13:1–16
8 ¶ And thou shalt shew thy son in that day,
saying, This is done because of that which the Lord did
unto me when I came forth out of Egypt.
9 And it shall be for a sign unto thee
upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that
the Lord’s law may be in thy mouth: for with a strong hand hath
the Lord brought thee out of Egypt.
10 Thou shalt therefore keep this
ordinance in his season from year to year.
14 ¶ And it shall be when
thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What is this?
that thou shalt say unto him, By strength of hand
the Lord brought us out from Egypt, from the house
of bondage:
15 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh would
hardly let us go, that the Lord slew all the firstborn in the
land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man, and the firstborn of beast: therefore
I sacrifice to the Lord all that openeth the matrix, being males; but
all the firstborn of my children I redeem.
16 And it shall be for a token upon thine hand,
and for frontlets between thine eyes: for by strength of hand
the Lord brought us forth out of Egypt.
Remember that the Passover and the Sacrament are linked
together. Like ancient Israel, today’s covenant Israel is also commanded to
always remember the Lord.
Moroni
4:3
3 O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son,
Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls
of all those who partake of it; that they may eat in remembrance of
the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that
they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always
remember him, and keep his commandments which he hath given them, that they may
always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.
5:2
2 O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee, in the name of thy
Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this wine to the souls of
all those who drink of it, that they may do it in remembrance of
the blood of thy Son, which was shed for them; that they may witness
unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they do always remember him, that
they may have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.
Remembering is important to our salvation.
Helaman
5:6–12
9 O remember, remember, my sons, the words which king
Benjamin spake unto his people; yea, remember that there is no other way nor
means whereby man can be saved, only through the atoning blood of
Jesus Christ, who shall come; yea, remember that he cometh
to redeem the world.
12 And now, my sons, remember, remember that it
is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that
ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his
mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his
mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to
drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon
which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men
build they cannot fall.
Moroni
10:3
3 Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things,
if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember
how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the
creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things,
and ponder it in your hearts.
Doctrine
and Covenants 3:3–5, 10
3 Remember, remember that it is not the work of God that
is frustrated, but the work of men;
and remember also the promises which were made to you, if you did not
transgress them.
10 But remember, God is merciful; therefore,
repent of that which thou hast done which is contrary to the commandment which
I gave you, and thou art still chosen, and art again called to the
work;
18:10
10 Remember the worth of souls is great in the
sight of God;
52:40
40 And remember in all things the poor and
the needy, the sick and the afflicted, for he that doeth not
these things, the same is not my disciple.
Learn what the Father would have you do, and then remember
to do it.

For Kids
The Lord has power over all things.
Exodus
7–11
The Lord is so powerful, and He can do all things for our
good and His name’s glory.
(You can teach the children about the plagues in Egypt, but emphasize the
protection, peace, and comfort we receive when we listen to the Lord and follow
the prophet.
Exodus
7:17–18; 8:1–4; 8:16–17; 8:20–22; 9:1–6; 9:8–9; 9:22–23; 10:4–5; 10:21–22; 11:4–7)
Exodus
7:5
5 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord,
when I stretch forth mine hand upon Egypt, and bring out the children of Israel
from among them.
9:14
14 For I will at this time send all my plagues upon thine
heart, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people; that thou mayest know
that there is none like me in all the earth.
The Lord gives us many chances to choose Him, to follow His
prophets, and to heed His commandments, because He always us agency, the
freedom to choose. There are consequences when we choose to ignore God or fight
against Him.
God has all power and all glory. He loves us, and He wants us to be free and
happy. He wanted the children of Israel to be free. He sent Jesus Christ, so
that all of us can be free from sin and death and make it back to heaven, just
like the Israelites made it to the Promised Land.
In our day, we will continue to see the power of the Lord’s arm in our lives.
The Lord can help me have a soft heart.
Exodus
8:28–32; 9:7
You could compare a sponge and a rock to a willing, soft,
and open heart and to a hard heart that doesn’t want to accept any knew ideas
or change anything that’s wrong.
Sponges can absorb water. Do we allow our hearts to absorb God’s teachings and
His love for us. Rocks let water run off them, or they can be used to hurt
others or ourselves. Do we use our hearts to be quick to repent and quick to
forgive, or do we carry anger and hate in our hearts?
Pharaoh kept hardening his heart, even though he saw God’s miracles
and all His words being fulfilled. He kept breaking his promise to let the
Israelites go. Exodus
8:28–32; 9:7
Mosiah

We need to be humble in order to have our hearts right
before God.
The sacrament can help me remember Jesus.
Exodus
12:1–13
Exodus
12:1–13 The Passover helped the children of Israel remember how the
Lord rescued them and saved them from Pharaoh and Egypt. It also pointed them
towards Jesus Christ, who is the real Passover for all of us.

sheep, or from the goats:

Passover
After the Last Supper was instituted at the Passover meal,
we remember Jesus through partaking of the Sacrament every week.
Why are you thankful for the sacrament?
How do you know that Heavenly Father and Jesus love you?
Are there songs that help you remember Jesus?
