4 The Fall of Adam and Eve
The Fall of Adam and Eve
Genesis
3:16–19 Even though the Fall might look dismal, it is not. It is opportunity
for growth and advancement.
“Leaving the Garden of Eden was the necessary first step
toward returning to God and eventually becoming like Him.”
Moses
5:11 And Eve, his wife, heard all these things and was glad, saying: Were
it not for our transgression we never should have had seed, and never
should have known good and evil, and the joy of our redemption, and
the eternal life which God giveth unto all the obedient.
Because of Adam and Eve’s fall, an eternity of possibilities
is available to us.
The Fall was a necessary part of God’s plan.
Genesis
3; Moses 4
Why was the Fall important to God’s answer?
Moses
5:9–12 Adam and Eve received the Holy Ghost and personal revelation. They
began to understand the reason for the Fall and the blessings of having a
Savior.
2 Nephi
2:19–25 The Fall allowed for God’s Plan to take effect in the world and in
the lives of Adam and Eve. They had time to learn, teach, and follow the gospel
in their home.
Mosiah
3:19 For the natural man is an enemy to God, and
has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless
he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit,
and putteth off the natural man and becometh
a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as
a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to
submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a c
Alma
12:21–37 Opposition and agency are essential to our progression. We need to
put off the natural man and live by the Spirit.
Doctrine
and Covenants 29:39–43 The Fall was a necessary step in the Plan of
Salvation. This life became a probationary period for us to prove our devotion
to God and His commandments.
Jesus Christ offers hope and redemption.
Genesis
3:1–7; Moses
4:22–31; 5:4–15

Genesis
3:1–7 The serpent beguiled Eve; the Spirit enlightened Eve; and Eve partook
of the fruit.
Moses
4:22–31 The results of the Fall were more of a blessing than a cursing. Though
the results of the Fall brought challenges to Adam and Eve, these challenges
were necessary for their growth.
Because of Him all things are possible: repentance,
forgiveness, growth, faith, progression. We will live again because of Him.
What does it mean that Adam was to “rule over” Eve?
Genesis
3:16; Moses
4:22
We are helps meet for one another. Husbands and wives are
equal partners.
The
Family: A Proclamation to the World
I need agency and opposition to grow.
Moses
4:1–4
Are we choosing to do what is right, so that we can be led
by the Spirit and progress on the covenant path so that we can become like God?
We cannot earn our salvation or exaltation, but we can
choose it through our Faith in Jesus Christ and following our Father’s Plan.
Jesus knows us intimately, because He atoned for us and is
our Mediator with the Father. Ultimately, we will be judged not only for the
things that we do or don’t do, but for the intents of our heart.
Moses
4:1–4 3 Wherefore, because
that Satan rebelled against me, and sought to destroy
the agency of man, which I, the Lord God, had given him, and also,
that I should give unto him mine own power; by the power of mine Only Begotten,
I caused that he should be cast down;
Heavenly Father and Jesus have and will always defend our
right to choose.
2 Nephi
2:11–20, 25–30 14 And now, my sons, I speak unto you these
things for your profit and learning; for there is a God, and he
hath created all things, both the heavens and the earth, and all
things that in them are, both things to act and things to be acted upon.
15 And to bring about his
eternal purposes in the end of man, after he
had created our first parents, and the beasts of the field and
the fowls of the air, and in fine, all things which are created, it
must needs be that there was an opposition; even
the forbidden fruit in opposition to the tree of
life; the one being sweet and the other bitter.
16 Wherefore, the Lord God gave unto man that he
should act for himself. Wherefore, man could not act for
himself save it should be that he was enticed by the one or the
other.
27 Wherefore, men are free according
to the flesh; and all things are given them which are
expedient unto man. And they are free to choose liberty and
eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose
captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil; for he
seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself.
28 And now, my sons, I would that ye should look
to the great Mediator, and hearken unto his great commandments; and be
faithful unto his words, and choose eternal life, according to the will of his
Holy Spirit;
29 And not choose eternal death, according to
the will of the flesh and the evil which is therein, which giveth the
spirit of the devil power to captivate, to bring you down to hell,
that he may reign over you in his own kingdom.
Satan seeks “to deceive and to blind” me.
Moses
4:4–12; 5:13–33
Moses
4:4–12; 5:13–33
How does Satan try to damage our agency through tempting us? How does he seek
to tempt all of us? How does Heavenly Father help you resist Satan’s
deceptions?
“I, the Lord God … clothed them.”
Moses
4:13–16, 27
Moses
4:13–16, 27 Adam and Even realized they were naked and made fig leaf
aprons. Heavenly Father had respect and compassion towards them and gave them
appropriate clothing, coats of skins.
What nakedness and clothing can represent in the scriptures?
Revelation
7:9, 13–15 13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me,
What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?
14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And
he said to me, These are they which came out of
great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made
them white in the blood of the Lamb.
2 Nephi
9:14 14 Wherefore, we shall have
a perfect knowledge of all our guilt, and
our uncleanness, and our nakedness; and the righteous shall have
a perfect knowledge of their enjoyment, and their righteousness,
being clothed with purity, yea, even with the robe of
righteousness.
Our choices can cloth us with righteousness and power, or
strip us of those things.
Doctrine
and Covenants 109:22–26, 76 From the dedication of the Kirtland Temple.
14 Wherefore, we shall have
a perfect knowledge of all our guilt, and
our uncleanness, and our nakedness; and the righteous shall have
a perfect knowledge of their enjoyment, and their righteousness,
being clothed with purity, yea, even with the robe of
righteousness.

God will accept my sacrifices if I offer them with a
willing and obedient heart.
Moses
5:4–9, 16–26
Moses
5:4–9, 16–26 5 And he gave unto them commandments, that they
should worship the Lord their God, and should offer
the firstlings of their flocks, for an offering unto the Lord.
And Adam was obedient unto the commandments of the Lord.
6 And after many days an angel of the
Lord appeared unto Adam, saying: Why dost thou offer sacrifices unto
the Lord? And Adam said unto him: I know not, save the Lord commanded me.
7 And then the angel spake, saying: This thing
is a similitude of the sacrifice of the Only Begotten of
the Father, which is full of grace and truth.
8 Wherefore, thou shalt do all that thou doest
in the name of the Son, and thou
shalt repent and call upon God in the name of the Son
forevermore.
18 And Cain loved Satan more than God.
And Satan commanded him, saying: Make an offering unto the Lord.
19 And in process of time it came to pass that
Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.
20 And Abel, he also brought of
the firstlings of his flock, and of the fat thereof. And the Lord
had respect unto Abel, and to his offering;
21 But unto Cain, and to his offering, he
had not respect. Now Satan knew this, and it pleased him. And Cain
was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
Abel gave the sacrifice that the Lord required; Cain did
not.
When we choose to give sacrifices unto the Lord, they should
be done in humility before Him according to His recommendations and the
requirements of His laws for us.
Why would the Lord accept a sacrifice that had been commanded
by Satan?
Our hearts and our intents must be right before God.
- Did
God give Adam and Eve conflicting commandments in the Garden of Eden?
- Was
it a sin for Adam and Eve to partake of the forbidden fruit?
- What
do we know about the curse and mark placed upon Cain?

Jesus Christ saves us from the Fall.
Genesis 3; Moses 4; 5:8–15
Moses
4:25 Work is important to our progress in life.
6:48
Because of the Fall we face challenges that bring sadness, and we face death.
But these things are counteracted by growth, joy, and the happiness of our
salvation from death and sin through the atonement of Jesus Christ.
Romans
5:12 Adam and Eve introduced mortality through the Fall; and Jesus Christ
brought about immortality for all and eternal life for all the sons and
daughters of God.
2 Nephi
2:22–23 22 And now, behold, if Adam had not transgressed he
would not have fallen, but he would have remained in the garden of Eden. And
all things which were created must have remained in the same state in which
they were after they were created; and they must have remained forever, and had
no end.
23 And they would have had no children;
wherefore they would have remained in a state of innocence, having no joy,
for they knew no misery; doing no good, for they knew no sin.
The Fall was so necessary.
Moses
5:8–11, 14–15 8 Wherefore, thou shalt do all that thou doest in
the name of the Son, and thou
shalt repent and call upon God in the name of the Son
forevermore.
9 And in that day the Holy Ghost fell
upon Adam, which beareth record of the Father and the Son, saying: I am
the Only Begotten of the Father from the beginning, henceforth and
forever, that as thou hast fallen thou mayest
be redeemed, and all mankind, even as many as will.
10 And in that day Adam blessed God and
was filled, and began to prophesy concerning all the families of
the earth, saying: Blessed be the name of God, for because of
my transgression my eyes are opened, and in this life I
shall have joy, and again in the flesh I shall see God.
11 And Eve, his wife, heard all these things and
was glad, saying: Were it not for our transgression we never should have
had seed, and never should have known good and evil, and the joy
of our redemption, and the eternal life which God giveth unto all the obedient.
14 And the Lord God called upon men by
the Holy Ghost everywhere and commanded them that they should repent;
15 And as many as believed in the Son,
and repented of their sins, should be saved; and as many as believed not
and repented not, should be damned; and the words went forth out of the
mouth of God in a firm decree; wherefore they must be fulfilled.
The gospel was taught to Adam and Eve by angels of God. They
entered into covenants, were baptized, and received the gift of the Holy Ghost.
6:59
59 That by reason of transgression cometh the fall, which fall
bringeth death, and inasmuch as ye were born into the world by water, and
blood, and the spirit, which I have made, and so became
of dust a living soul, even so ye must be born again into
the kingdom of heaven, of water, and of the Spirit, and be cleansed by
blood, even the blood of mine Only Begotten; that ye might be sanctified from
all sin, and enjoy the words of eternal life in
this world, and eternal life in the world to come, even immortal glory;
Rebirth is a necessary part of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
We must be baptized, confirmed, and receive a remission of our sins. This is
ongoing through the sacrament.
Alma
11:42 42 Now, there is a death which is called a temporal
death; and the death of Christ shall loose the bands of this temporal
death, that all shall be raised from this temporal death.
I can choose the right.
Moses
4:1–4
Would you like to just have one color to color with, or
would you prefer 64?
Moses
4:1–4 When Heavenly Father chose Jesus to be our Savior, He preserved
our agency and the freedom that we have to make choices.
Heavenly Father and Jesus can help us make good choices
through the light of Christ and the power of the Holy Ghost.
We also have parents, scriptures, prophets and leaders.
I can pray to Heavenly Father.
Moses
5:4, 8
Moses
5:4, 8 4 And Adam and Eve, his wife, called upon the
name of the Lord, and they heard the voice of the Lord from the way toward the
Garden of Eden, speaking unto them, and they saw him not; for they were
shut out from his presence.
8 Wherefore, thou shalt do all that thou doest
in the name of the Son, and thou
shalt repent and call upon God in the name of the Son
forevermore.
How can we stay close to the Spirit by worshiping Heavenly
Father and Jesus Christ?
Prayers of gratitude, prayers for help, reading the
scriptures, desiring to listen and learn, serving our family and friends.
