20 Beware Lest Thou Forget the Lord
Beware Lest Thou Forget the Lord
Beware Lest Thou Forget the Lord
Exodus
3:1–10 God called Moses from the burning bush.
1 Now Moses kept the flock
of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he
led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of
God, even to Horeb.
2 And the angel of
the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the
midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire,
and the bush was not consumed.
3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside,
and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.
4 And when the Lord saw that
he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the
bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.
5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put
off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou
standest is holy ground.
6 Moreover he said, I am the God of
thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And
Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
7 ¶ And the Lord said, I
have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt,
and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know
their sorrows;
8 And I am
come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians,
and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a
land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of
the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites,
and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.
9 Now therefore, behold,
the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have also
seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them.
10 Come now therefore, and I
will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring
forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.
Deuteronomy
34:1–4 God showed the promised land to Moses.
1 And Moses went up from the plains of
Moab unto the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over
against Jericho. And the Lord shewed him all the land of Gilead,
unto Dan,
2 And all Naphtali, and the land of
Ephraim, and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah, unto the utmost sea,
3 And the south, and the plain of
the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, unto Zoar.
4 And the Lord said unto him,
This is the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto
Isaac, and unto Jacob, saying, I will give it unto thy seed: I have caused thee
to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not go over thither.
Exodus
3:8 8 And I am come down to deliver them
out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a
good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto
the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the
Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.
Moses had spent his life not only preparing the people for
their promised land on this earth, but for the things they may think, say, and
do to become the Lord’s people so that they could enter the promised land of
Eternal Life with our Heavenly Father. In Deuteronomy, Moses pleads with the
people to remember God, what He has done for them, to love Him and to love
their neighbors, to be obedient and to remain faithful to our covenants and to
marry within the covenant. Our arrival to the promised land of Eternal Life is our
Father’s goal for us and the quest of our lifetime. Remembering the Lord and
relying on His Atonement and mercy is essential to our spiritual and physical
eternal salvation.
“Love the Lord thy God with all thine heart.”
Deuteronomy
6:4–7; 8:2–5,
11–17; 29:18–20; 30:6–10,
14–20
How is your heart health? Assess the spiritual condition of
your heart.
Deuteronomy
6:4–7: Do you listen? Do you remember that God loves you and that He comes
first? Do you live for Him and testify of Him?
4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our
God is one Lord:
5 And thou
shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and
with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
6 And these words, which I command
thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
7 And thou shalt teach them
diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou
sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest
down, and when thou risest up.
Deuteronomy
8:2–5: Do you remember the trials and wildernesses that the Lord has
brought you through? Are you meek and thankful? Do you trust in His promises
even now? Do you accept His reproof with thankful heart?
2 And thou shalt remember all the way
which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness,
to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know
what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his
commandments, or no.
3 And he humbled thee, and
suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not,
neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know
that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that
proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live.
4 Thy raiment waxed not old upon
thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.
5 Thou shalt also consider in thine
heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the Lord thy
God chasteneth thee.
Deuteronomy
8:11–17: Do you accept the Lord’s commandments as true and right, or do you
dismiss them if they aren’t favorable to the world? Do you remember when you
have gotten bitten for disobedience in the past, and do you remember when
you’ve been healed by looking to the Lord and seeking after Him?
11 Beware that thou forget not
the Lord thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and
his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:
12 Lest when thou hast
eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein;
13 And when thy herds
and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all
that thou hast is multiplied;
14 Then
thine heart be lifted up, and
thou forget the Lord thy God, which brought thee forth out
of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;
15 Who led thee through that great and
terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and
scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who
brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;
16 Who fed thee in the wilderness
with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and
that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;
17 And thou say in thine heart, My power
and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.
Deuteronomy
29:18–20: Do you suppose to think that you will be given the same blessings
as the faithful when you are not faithful?
18 Lest there should be among you man, or
woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turneth away this day from
the Lord our God, to go and serve the gods of these
nations; lest there should be among you a root that beareth gall and
wormwood;
19 And it come to pass, when he heareth
the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart,
saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of mine heart, to
add drunkenness to thirst:
20 The Lord will not spare him,
but then the anger of the Lord and his jealousy shall smoke against
that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie
upon him, and the Lord shall blot out his name from under
heaven.
Deuteronomy
30:6–10: Will you continue to repent and praise the Lord? He is desirous to
give you the blessings given to your fathers if you hearken to His voice and
keep His commandments.
6 And the Lord thy God
will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed,
to love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all
thy soul, that thou mayest live.
7 And the Lord thy God will
put all these curses upon thine enemies, and on them that hate
thee, which persecuted thee.
8 And thou shalt return and obey the
voice of the Lord, and do all his commandments which I command thee this
day.
9 And the Lord thy God will
make thee plenteous in every work of thine hand, in the fruit of thy
body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, for good:
for the Lord will again rejoice over thee for good, as he rejoiced
over thy fathers:
10 If thou shalt hearken unto the voice
of the Lord thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which
are written in this book of the law, and if
thou turn unto the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and
with all thy soul.
Deuteronomy
30:14–20: Do you value the commandments of the Lord to keep them? Do you
hearken to the words of the prophet?
14 But the word is very
nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.
15 ¶ See, I have set before thee
this day life and good, and death and evil;
16 In that I command thee this day to
love the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his
commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and
multiply: and the Lord thy God shall bless thee in the land whither
thou goest to possess it.
17 But if thine heart turn away, so that
thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve
them;
18 I denounce unto you this
day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not
prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest over
Jordan to go to possess it.
19 I call heaven and earth to record this
day against you, that I have set before you life and death,
blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and
thy seed may live:
20 That thou mayest love
the Lord thy God, and that thou
mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for
he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou
mayest dwell in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers, to
Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

“Beware lest thou forget the Lord.”
Deuteronomy
6:4–12, 20–25
Deuteronomy
6:4–12, 20–25 As a nation we have forgotten the sacrifices of those who
went before us and the faith that they had in God to build this nation. What
are we doing to keep His memory alive in our own hearts, homes, and lives? What
are we doing to revive that memory in the public square?
4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our
God is one Lord:
5 And thou
shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and
with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
6 And these words, which I command
thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
7 And thou shalt teach them
diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou
sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest
down, and when thou risest up.
8 And thou shalt bind them for
a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be
as frontlets between thine eyes.
9 And thou shalt write them upon
the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
10 And it shall be, when
the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware
unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and
goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,
11 And houses full of all good things, which
thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and
olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;
12 Then beware lest thou forget the Lord,
which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
20 And when thy son asketh thee in time to
come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the
statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord our God hath commanded you?
21 Then thou shalt say unto thy son,
We were Pharaoh’s bondmen in Egypt; and the Lord brought us out of
Egypt with a mighty hand:
22 And the Lord shewed signs
and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his
household, before our eyes:
23 And he brought us out from thence,
that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our
fathers.
24 And
the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes,
to fear the Lord our God, for our good always,
that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this
day.
25 And it shall be
our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments
before the Lord our God, as he hath commanded us.
verse 6
Are we observing God’s commandment to keep these things in our hearts and to
share them constantly and consistently?

Deuteronomy
15:1–15
Deuteronomy
15:4 We still have poor among us.
verses
1–15 We are not to hold each other in usury, or to hold grudges, or
keep score of debts. When we learn to love our neighbors as ourselves, we will
all be blessed together. Am I giving freely to others? Am I giving what I can?
1 At the end of every seven years
thou shalt make a release.
2 And this is the
manner of the release: Every creditor that lendeth ought unto
his neighbour shall release it; he shall not exact it of
his neighbour, or of his brother; because it is called the Lord’s release.
3 Of a foreigner thou mayest exact it
again: but that which is thine with thy brother thine
hand shall release;
4 Save when there shall be
no poor among you; for the Lord shall greatly bless thee in the
land which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an
inheritance to possess it:
5 Only if thou carefully hearken unto
the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe to do all these
commandments which I command thee this day.
6 For the Lord thy God
blesseth thee, as he promised thee: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, but
thou shalt not borrow; and thou shalt reign over many nations, but they
shall not reign over thee.
7 ¶ If there be among you a poor
man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which
the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine
heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother:
8 But thou shalt open
thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for
his need, in that which he wanteth.
9 Beware that there be not a thought in
thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand;
and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest him
nought; and he cry unto the Lord against thee, and it be
sin unto thee.
10 Thou shalt surely give him, and thine
heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this
thing the Lord thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all
that thou puttest thine hand unto.
11 For the poor shall never cease out of
the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open
thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in
thy land.
12 ¶ And if thy brother,
an Hebrew man, or an Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee, and serve thee
six years; then in the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee.
13 And when thou sendest him out free
from thee, thou shalt not let him go away empty:
14 Thou shalt furnish him liberally out
of thy flock, and out of thy floor, and out of thy winepress: of
that wherewith the Lord thy God hath blessed thee thou shalt
give unto him.
15 And thou shalt remember that
thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt, and the Lord thy God
redeemed thee: therefore I command thee this thing to day.

18:15–19
Deuteronomy
18:15–19 The Lord spoke through Moses to let them know that He would be
coming to the earth to save all people.
15 ¶ The Lord thy God
will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee,
of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
16 According to all that thou desiredst
of the Lord thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let
me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God, neither let
me see this great fire any more, that I die not.
17 And the Lord said unto me,
They have well spoken that which they have spoken.
18 I will raise them up
a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put
my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all
that I shall command him.
19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever
will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will
require it of him.
Acts
3:20–23 Do I recognize the words of the prophet to acknowledge that Jesus
Christ is my Savior who was sent? Do I recognize that He will come to earth
again to rule and reign?
20 And he shall send Jesus Christ,
which before was preached unto you:
21 Whom the heaven must receive until the
times of restitution of all things, which God
hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world
began.
22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers,
A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren,
like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.
23 And it shall come to pass, that every
soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among
the people.
1 Nephi
22:20–21 Nephi also had the prophecies of Moses and other holy prophets,
and he added his own that Jesus is the Christ.
20 And the Lord will
surely prepare a way for his people, unto the fulfilling of the words
of Moses, which he spake, saying: A prophet shall the Lord your God
raise up unto you, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he
shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass that all those who will not hear
that prophet shall be cut off from among the people.
21 And now I, Nephi, declare unto you,
that this prophet of whom Moses spake was the Holy One of Israel;
wherefore, he shall execute judgment in righteousness.
Joseph
Smith—History 1:40 Moroni and Joseph
also added their testimonies to that of the prophets that Jesus is the Christ.
40 In addition to these, he quoted
the eleventh chapter of Isaiah, saying that it was about to be
fulfilled. He quoted also the third chapter of Acts, twenty-second
and twenty-third verses, precisely as they stand in our New Testament. He said that
that prophet was Christ; but the day had not yet come when “they who
would not hear his voice should be cut off from among the people,”
but soon would come.
3 Nephi
20:23 Jesus Himself witnessed to the people that He was fulfilling His
prophecies and promises. He was the prophet who should come to redeem His
people, and He is the Risen Lord.
23 Behold, I am he of whom Moses spake,
saying: A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your
brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say
unto you. And it shall come to pass that every soul who will not hear that
prophet shall be cut off from among the people.
Jesus Christ told His people in ancient America, “I am he of
whom the prophet Moses spake” (3 Nephi
20:23).

2 Nephi
2:26–29 Words from Nephi: Commandments given, and we can choose
26 And the Messiah cometh in
the fulness of time, that he may redeem the children of men from the
fall. And because that they are redeemed from the fall they have
become free forever, knowing good from evil; to act for themselves
and not to be acted upon, save it be by the punishment of the law at
the great and last day, according to the commandments which God hath given.
27 Wherefore, men
are free according to the flesh; and all things
are given them which are expedient unto man. And they are free
to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great
Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the
captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might
be miserable like unto himself.
28 And now, my sons, I would that ye
should look to the great Mediator, and hearken unto his great
commandments; and be faithful unto his words, and choose eternal life,
according to the will of his Holy Spirit;
29 And not choose eternal death,
according to the will of the flesh and the evil which is therein,
which giveth the spirit of the devil power to captivate, to bring you down
to hell, that he may reign over you in his own kingdom.
4:4

baptism into his church.
77 O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the
name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to
the souls of all those who partake of it, that they may eat in remembrance of
the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal
Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always
remember him and keep his commandments which he has given them; that
they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.
